Efficient Pool Measurements Help You Complete More Jobs

Time at the jobsite has a direct effect on how much work your company can complete. Measuring a pool for a replacement pool liner or safety cover may be one step in the project, but on a complicated pool, that step can consume a surprising amount of time.

There are points to establish, dimensions to record, depths to confirm, and curves to document. Add steps, benches, sun ledges, or an irregular shape, and the measuring process becomes even more involved.

Technology is changing that part of the job. More efficient pool measurements can reduce time in the field, provide manufacturers with more detailed information, and help pool companies move more projects through the schedule.

Accurate Measurements for a Vinyl Pool Liner

A vinyl liner is manufactured for the dimensions and contours of a specific pool. The measurements submitted for fabrication affect how that liner fits across the floor, walls, corners, slopes, steps, and other features.

Traditional A-B measuring has served the pool industry for decades, but it can be labor intensive. A technician has to establish reference points and collect numerous measurements across the pool. Complex shapes increase the number of measurements and the time involved.

There is also a business cost attached to that time. If a crew spends hours measuring one pool, those are hours lost for another service call, liner installation, estimate, or customer appointment.

For a busy pool company, the measuring process can become a bottleneck.

Faster Pool Measurements Free Up the Schedule

Reducing the amount of time spent collecting measurements changes the math.

If information can be gathered in minutes instead of hours, a technician can visit several properties in the time once devoted to one complicated measurement. That becomes especially valuable during the busy spring liner season or fall pool cover season, when schedules fill quickly.

Faster data collection also reduces the disruption for homeowners. The pool professional spends less time working around the property while still gathering the information required to order a custom vinyl pool liner or safety cover.

You want to remove unnecessary field time without giving up the detailed information required for manufacturing.

Kaydrone™ Brings 3D Technology to Pool Measuring

Kaydrone drone measuring for vinyl liners and safety covers

Kaydrone™ was developed specifically for this problem. The system uses a compatible camera drone and advanced 3D modeling to capture the geometry of a pool. A typical poolside drone flight takes approximately five to 10 minutes. The images are then processed by Kayden’s engineering team and converted into a detailed 3D model.

For an empty pool, the system can capture details such as depths, floor transitions, steps, benches, sun ledges, curves, and irregular shapes. The system has been field tested against traditional A-B measuring methods.

A pool doesn’t always have to be empty. When water prevents the camera from recording all underwater geometry, additional manual information may be required for vertical dimensions, slopes, and transition points.

One Measurement Can Support a Pool Liner and Pool Cover

Another advantage becomes apparent when homeowners purchase more than one custom product.

Traditionally, measuring for a vinyl liner for inground pools and measuring for a pool safety cover may be treated as separate jobs. If the homeowner later decides to add a swimming pool safety cover, another site visit is often required.

Kaydrone™ captures a broader geometric record of the pool and surrounding deck. The same data can support fabrication of a vinyl pool liner and a pool cover. It can even record the location of existing pool safety cover anchors when a replacement safety cover for pool protection is being ordered.

That can mean fewer repeat trips and less duplicated work.

Less time measuring creates more time for installations, service, estimates, and additional customers. Fewer manual measurements can also reduce the back-and-forth that occurs when an important detail was not captured during the first visit.

Behind that flight is an involved process designed to give the manufacturer a detailed view of the pool before fabrication begins.
